Last year, everything was new and I was thankful for the excitement that the newness lent. I was thankful for the other Volunteers and the appearance of a family that they provided while we just barely began to acquaint ourselves. I was thankful that training was going well and that I could see myself being happy here. I was just thankful for this experience and it hadn’t really even started yet.
This year, it is hard to put into words what I am grateful for. The other Volunteers are no longer mere acquaintances. They are my American family here and I know more about most of them than I ever wanted to know. I am grateful for my friendships here that challenge me, encourage me and remind me of the blessed friendships I have back home. I am thankful that despite the rollercoaster of a year, I am happy. I am incredibly grateful for the this time to step back, to see who I am removed from those who had a large role in crafting the person I am today, to simply be present in the moment that I am living now.
And obviously I am beyond grateful for the cranberry sauce. It was again enjoyed with sheer delight. It even got a fancy serving bowl this year.
